I’d be happy with saving ~$3b a year by means testing super.
While they are at it they could remove the landlords’ interest deductions to save another ~$2b.
Perhaps we could spend this money of paying nurses enough so they want to stay here instead of move to Oz.

I really wish Labour would see that the electorate has figured out that neoliberal policies don’t make our lives better. They are in the perfect position to lead us through the changes that are coming. Their refusal to acknowledge the need for structural change reminds me of the impotence of the American democrats.
The old tricks aren’t working anymore. They need to reinvent themselves based on what the Millenials and later actually want. Basically: stop robbing young people and giving it to the retirees.
Sorry for the rant. It’s just frustrating to watch.

I mean, if we’re going back in history, it’s relevant to point out: Labour passed “New Zealand Superannuation Act” in 1974 with a compulsory combined rate of 8 percent of earnings. If we had this since then we’d be quite a rich country and we wouldn’t be worried about super at all.
Muldoon’s National Party campaigned on undoing it because it was socialist or communist; and he undid it and then instead rolled out the pay-as-you-go system that we have now which is guaranteed to fall over right about when I’ll be ready to retire, based on numbers from Stats NZ.
The reality is the US empire dying in a death spiral is already creating a power vacuum and further destabilising global economies that were already facing existential threats. At some point, many countries will turn to conflict as a way to restart their economies. Not sure if you read my message but you may have missed “the economies” which means many countries; not just China. Nobody was suggesting aligning with the USA. Thanks for joining the conversation.
This kind of goes along with Gary’s ideas that wealthy people support far right groups to protect their assets. I always give $10 or $20 to the ones I support. It’s mostly so they can say they got donations from X number of people.

My point is that they aren’t doing anything. In my first post I used the word “impotence”. They have lost the ability to lead. There is a power vacuum being slurped up by the 3rd parties. If Labour doesn’t reinvent itself and actually do something then they risk being relegated to the periphery. Super easy starting point: Shift the tax burden from productive to non-productive.
This is so frustrating because it seems like their neoliberal core prevents them from doing very rational things that would benefit their base. They have the research and just choose to ignore it.
When something doesn’t make sense like this then some potential options are incompetence and … what else?
