I read a post that said he couldn’t go to war without a vote from congress, was that wrong?

Edit: I’m not a US citizen so I’m not sure

The constitution gives Congress the exclusive power to formally declare war.

That said, Congress hasn’t declared war since 1942, yet we’ve obviously taken part in many wars since then.

Sadly there just hasn’t been enough Congressional support to retaliate against a president for jumping to military action without authorization. And it doesn’t help that the average American doesn’t know that the president is not allowed to just deploy troops at will (in most cases, Iran included).

If the president can do it without consequences, then he is allowed. Turns out words on paper mean nothing.

The intelligence agencies contradicted that narrative. The administration hasn’t made a case that it is actually happening, but have just declared it so.

Very much rhymes with declaration that Iraq had WMDs.

As far as evidence goes, it looks like Trump has dragged us into another conflict that we really shouldn’t be in. Which is dissapointing as if there was one small silver lining about Trump was that his rhetoric used to be that we shouldn’t be wasting military resources in middle east conflicts so much.

Given how Germany, France, the UK etc have all lined up behind Israel, towing the line that Israel has a right to defend itself, and even going as far as saying that Israel is doing our dirty work for us, I have very serious doubts that Harris would not have followed Israel down the warpath.

Trump killed off the JCPOA in 2018. Biden had four years after 2020 to do something about that and didn’t. So I don’t know what you’re basing your assertion on, it sounds more like wishful thinking to me.

Iran had zero interest immediately re-entering the agreement the previous president just broke. And rightfully so.

Clearly you just want to blame Biden and Democrats for this and pretend things would be just as bad with Harris

Well clearly you have me all figured out, motives and all.

My original argument is specific: the way the European powers have aligned themselves with Israeli craziness does not inspire confidence that the Democrats would have been less hawkish. Underlying assumption: the Democrats tend to be as dovish as the Europeans.

The previous commenter made a counterfactual claim that Harris would not have pulled out of JCPOA and I pointed out that a Harris admin wouldn’t have a JCPOA to pull out of.

You’re now spinning a narrative around these very simple things I’ve said. Did the tankies hurt you and now you see them everywhere?

It’s fair game to blame citizens of fascist countries for the politics they helped to bring forward. And the “democrats and republicans are the same”-crowd that is very vocal on Lemmy definitely helped to enable this.

Have you ever once thought “maybe I/we didn’t do enough to stop the genocide”? Blaming the D politicians for supporting genocide? The D voters/financiers for not condemning the genocide?

Maybe try that if you ever get another chance to vote, lol. Good luck!

Or you can just continue blaming the people you failed to motivate against a fascist sociopath, twice. I’m sure things will turn out differently next time!

Closeted men of war preaching about peace. Closeted gays fighting against gay rights. Judgemental/greedy/racist religious people putting themselves on a pedestal about how you should “take care of thy neighbor”.

It’s always the ones who preach the most, the same ones doing the exact opposite of what they preach. Always the ones bitching about the bad in the world actively hard at work making the world a shittier place.

Seriously, if Trump says the sky is blue I’ll immediately look up just to check if it hasn’t turned red/green/pink/whatever.

Be always wary of the ones telling you how to live, and watch out for their actions closely. There’s no hate like the ‘love’ of these hypocrites.

Not defending any of this but these WW3 comments are so weird. The US has been in so many wars in the Middle East, why would this specific one turn into a world war? Especially since there will not be boots on the ground (you never know with trump but I think that’s genuinely the last thing he wants to do).

Can someone help me out here. How do they know that these sites are being used for nuclear weapons production specifically?

Iran does have a nuclear power plant and they do enrich their own uranium. Not trying to justify these bombings, I’m just curious on how they determined these sites are specifically for weapon manufacturing.
