I was thinking that as it seems times aren’t going to get easier that there should be a section aiming at supporting each other with practical info and also discussing issues to do with family or solo life, children, ageing and health.

Let me know your thoughts and if you like the concept, can you think of alternative names for the community? Let’s see what we can come up with.

Part of this is because of the anonymity and strong privacy aspects of the Lemmy network. I thikk a lot of the warmer ‘heart’ topics require sharing more personal information than a large section of the lemmy users are willing to participate in.

On the topic itself, it seems a little undefined. Reading it tonight I see a risk of the proposed community falling into a superficial lifestyle magazine type of thing. You know like the ‘5 best pasta dishes for a cheap night in’ type articles. They can be fun, even useful, but I’m not sure thats really what you’re imagining with this community.

What I’ve done with communities I’ve wanted to contribute in large ways to is search for a list of sources.

Thats helped in two ways, one its given me an ongoing source of more unique posts for that community, and secondly its helped me figure a direction of posts.

For instance c/Perth/WesternAustralia I haven’t posted much Murdoch or Stokes, its not banned, i just don’t like them so I don’t post them. I felt it could serve as a space for smaller WA journalism as well as being an independent social media alternative community for WA. Its a continuing project though I suppose.

It is an experiment. You don’t have to give away super intimate information just because you are interested in topics that can support people in their personal lives, especially in an increasingly constrained but also disconnected society. For example, I am deeply interested in the health and welfare of children (as well as the environment) but I no longer have children in my personal life.

I see a risk of the proposed community falling into a superficial lifestyle magazine type of thing. You know like the ‘5 best pasta dishes for a cheap night in’ type articles.

Ha ha, don’t pastafy the concept 😜 (btw, there is a food community here already). If from the beginning it were made clear that shallow, silly content was not the intent but that it is to provide current understanding and research on health, sociological, psychological topics as they affect people in their personal lives would this make it sound less sloppy?

What I’ve done with communities I’ve wanted to contribute in large ways to is search for a list of sources.

The area covered by this hypothetical community is far too broad to give a list of sources. I imagine these would emerge just from the posts put up by people, including for example, the reliable ‘The Conversation’, Guardian, mastheads and a plethora of organisations.

If this community were to start and I were to be a moderator (as you’ve suggested elsewhere) I would ask what genuine topics people here would be interested in and take some cues from that as well as put up articles that I find relevant. People may not be interested at all and that’s fine but I believe it’s fair to give them an opportunity to think of a new possibility.

Definitely, don’t get me wrong, not trying to be a debbie-downer on this experiment. Its a good idea. I think experimentation is one of best parts of the Social Web! I’m just participating to help develop the concept, pointing out things where a different perspective might be helpful. :)

If this community were to start and I were to be a moderator

I stand by that wholeheartedly, a community needs a few people really to be committed to its success for it to not become a junk post community, or worse stagnant and abandoned. An orphaned community from the beginning will ensure it’s failure.

I’d put my hand up to help, but i’m pretty full up already, and have been neglecting commitments i already decided to put on myself. But I’ll definitely jump in to support where I can.

Maybe some of the c/melbourne regular discussion peeps could help out with building this community. Taking on a kind of active moderator role?

Better make sure the admins are aware of the discussion of this idea. At the end the day its their decision to add a new community AZ.

We’re pretty happy to add any community there’s demand for. Community creation is only disabled to prevent a thousand empty communities from being created.

What are we calling it? aussie.zone/c/supportforliving is a bit of a mouthful - but there are certianly longer names around. Is that what you’re looking for? @arbilp3 ? Are you looking to moderate/curate it?

I’m fine with that. Let’s wait till the admins respond.

Also, once they do, and if they think it’d be worthwhile, should a post be put on the ‘Australia’ thread to let people know more broadly that this is being proposed? This would be to gauge interest and to see if someone can come up with a great name for the community.
