Like people still buy LPG? But oh you mean petrol.
Battery technology has finally reached the point where range is adequate for most people living on the coastal fringe of Australia. That’s about 20 million people.
I can drive a week in city traffic for $80 in my small petrol car. Or I can drive a week in city traffic for $15 in my EV which has three times the horsepower and is always fully charged in the morning when I leave the house.
And now the BYD Atto 1 EV is now the cheapest car in Australia for $19,990. Range isn’t that hot in that base model, but for a second “work car” it’s perfectly fine.
So I fully expect that the percentage of EVs sold is going to climb every month from here on out.
It is mainly because they are now so cheap.
The Chinese EVs have sucked all the bloat out of the market and cars that were being marketed between $60-80,000 are being marked down to $40-60,000.
A lot of the European EVs and ICE vehicles are pulling out of the market. Japanese Hybrid and ICE prices have not been slashed, but they are not selling either.
Either bloat, or the new model is to just sell all of your personal data.

Are there any ethical car brands that don’t do this?
Not really. From what I’ve seen, one of the lowest tech manufacturers still making new cars is Suzuki but they are not an “ethical” brand. They’re just budget and these days that often means skimping on tech.
Yeah, its is dated info but last I read about Mozilla testing every manufacturer failed. It isn’t world vs China or ICE vs EV. They are all the same.
They’re not the same in terms of new market share or government control, though. That’s why there is a focus on Chinese EVs in Australia.
That is how they keep upfront costs down.
