Every CEO calling for a pause on AI just makes me think that it’s a part of the scam like, “of course it’s not making money, we paused it, now can we get subsidies to stick around until we can unpause it?”

What a ‘pause’ really means is restricting new entrants to the market to safeguard the position and profit of the current encumbants.

The current players won big by rolling out harmful AI without any safeguards, and being the only ones who could do it because they had the technical lead in AI.

Now, open weight models are getting really good and the technical advantage is evaporating, so they instead are seeking process and legislative controls to help them “pull up the ladder” and restrict any potential competition.

I think it just caught them by surprise with how little value they actually provide.

They clearly expected open weight models to lag behind a couple years for at least a couple more years - but cause all their entire company dos is clicking start on a python programming, its pretty trivially FOSS-able.

…the position and profit of the current encumbants.

What profit? The only companies that have made money are hardware manufacturers like Nvidia, AMD, and Micron. Everyone else is in the hole and not even close to breaking even.
