People don’t care. It’s all the "patriots"pretending they do because they need to fit in.

Seriously, turn it into a race of drunk people and I’ll bet on that shit

Or, make the jockeys run around and qualify on high heels and if they injure themselves then put them down. Then they deserved to race on horses

The whole thing is so stupid

This is posted to /C/Australia. You’d be pretty hard pressed to find an Australian anywhere who doesn’t know what the Melbourne cup is.

It’s just another Victorian betting holiday. We really need to find better reasons to take time off work.

In the UK or public holidays are mostly just like “May Bank Holiday”, “September Bank Holiday” and so on. We don’t even invent a fake King’s birthday, because that’s always at the weekend so they can do trooping the colour in London.

It’s literally remembrance day next week but we chose to make the horse racing the public holiday (Melbourne) and Novembers big day. Next week everyone walks past the old men selling poppies. Pretty sad really.

They don’t see it as Animal Cruelty. That said, they don’t see bashing human people who are different to them as Cruelty either.

Also, because they don’t understand maths, probability and the Law of Very Large Numbers.

But it’s the sport of kings!

Careful research and knowledge of the horses, jockeys, and track is needed to select the optimal competitor for that cheeky $50 punt you put on while trying to use the self-checkout at Woolies. Don’t tell the Mrs, she’ll lose her shit again.

I have been 'nup to the cup for years now. I did used to flutter during the Spring but gave it up when Red Cadeaux died. It’s too cruel.

Did anyone go to one of the protests? I totally forgot as I WFH and don’t live in Vic. Would be cool to see horse racing ended.

It was high school and also my pop that introduced gambling to me. At school they had that hat draw thing where everyone puts money in and draws a name out of a hat. I’d never heard of it before but all the other kids seemed to know about it. I had two home room groups for some reason and in both groups I drew Lets Elope. When pop called that evening he asked if he could put a bet on for me, which he’d never done before. I only knew there was Lets Elope so I said that.

So after those small wins pop invited me to a couple of races. I really didn’t understand the appeal but my aunties, uncles and cousins were talking about how they went all the time.

One day I visited some of those cousins after we had all grown up. Someone suggested going out for a drink, great idea. But we ended up at a club, not a bar or hotel, and they all proceed to head to the pokies and start throwing their money away. I really didn’t understand what the fuck was going on. So I just waited for them to finish giving away their money on the pokies before we all went back to their place.

My cousin’s all turned out mostly fine, but it was really weird watching them give money away to a machie like that.

When each of my nieces turned 18, we took them to the local bar with Pokies and gave them $50.

15 minutes later, we all walked out, $50 poorer and they never played pokies again.

My mrs is from Korea and gambling is illegal there so I did the same with $50 when we went to a club.

Five minutes later she couldn’t speak English anymore due to excitement as she’d hit a jackpot. So that backfired lol

I have gambled $10 in my life. Less than half of that being my own money. Had an uncle who tried to convince me to give it a go and after 3 $2 bets he gave up. Every workplace I have ever worked I have had to go through the same explanations that I find gambling distasteful and don’t want to participate, got a lot of flack from a manager once for pointing out that statistically buying a lottery ticket doesn’t significantly alter your odds of winning. Hell buying a ticket once a week for your entire life doesn’t do much to change the odds.

Depends how persistent they are. I was at the end of my rope after a day of pressure, bloody corporate culture mentality. Current job I said “No thanks” and they went “Cool”.

Hence the new job. My current colleagues swear like sailors, bitch moan and complain about every aspect of the job, and a few of them just refuse to do things the right way out of sheer bloody mindedness. And the morale on the worst day here is at least 3x better than the aspirations of the call center. Plus I am getting a wage that I still don’t feel I have actually earnt compared to the big company. In this one particular aspect of my existence, life is very good.

The most I do is a raffle at the pub a couple of times a year, but I treat it as pure fundraising. I literally don’t even want the prizes and give them away.

I saw a thread elsewhere with people retelling stories and it clicked with me how early this, and two-up, were introduced to us, but also how it was often introduced through institutions such as schools and workplaces.
