Developed in partnership with the GrapheneOS Foundation, the leading nonprofit in advanced mobile security, the device reflects Motorola’s commitment to bringing cutting-edge security to everyday users across the globe.

everyday users who can afford a $1600 phone, that is 🙄

I think the best thing with GOS on pixels has been that you could always buy a previous model year (within about 2-3 years) and load it up to save some money. I desperately want to ditch my old Pixel 7 Pro for a new GOS device, but $1600 is super expensive for a new phone right now. I miss the days where you could buy an older phone and add a custom ROM with little effort. I love that security is being taken more seriously, but I just want a basic, secure, de-Googled device that is affordable.

I usually buy refurbished. I’m typing this on a refurbished Pixel 7a running GrapheneOS.

I had a Pixel 7 Pro laying around and its good enough, but I think it would be great if the camera was better. The GOS camera app consistently crashes on me when I use Night Mode. I switched from a moto RAZR 2024 and prefer the small form factor of the RAZR. I’ve debated on switching to a pixel 9a, but I’m holding out hope that we’ll eventually see a RAZR with GOS soon.

Its a step in the right direction. Better to have an expensive option than none at all, and it will get cheaper as demand grows. Because right now what are the options? A google pixel, made by a company that is actively trying to kill the while project. Graphene needs certain hardware features for security, and that’s essentially what your paying for with phones capable of running it.

Right, and also every other Android manufacturer is expecting data harvesting telemetry throughout the lifetime of the device to make up some additional revenue.

Google and Motorola are going to be getting none of that with Graphene OS. Users will have to do that themselves (install their apps), if they want.
