Independence day was great when it was released. Men in black, too.

Lucy was interesting. Ghost in the machine wasnt as good as the (amazing) original, but was still good.

Haha, yes I did. It got criticism for whitewashing. That’s not on Herz that’s in the producers. She did as fine a job as of expect anyone to do, but it’s a pretty robotic role.

As a fan of the 1995 Ghost in the Shell I didn’t like my first viewing of this remake but have since realised it was because of my own expectations. Now I watch it as a different film and enjoy it a lot more.

Yes, I find with any remake or reboot, you have to be ready to abandon preconceptions of what you wanted or expected. Fan service is good and bad. There is no point in a remake where it is all the same. Generally, of it’s a ground breaking classic, the remake is bound to disappoint. It can never be as groundbreaking or original, by definition. Subverting expectations can be good but it requires reference to the original, that the original can stand on its own without

Ghost in the Shell was horrible. She played the Major as a completely different character than the original. Scarlett Johansen plays a really good seductive spy, but that’s all she plays. Major Kusanagi was ace.

For me, I found the bits that were most a copy of the anime to be most disconcerting and disappointing. What they did differently was more interesting.

I did like Major, I didn’t like Dr ouelet but I like Juliette binoche. It was a bit stilted. Michael Pitt was a bit one note and underwhelming but it might also be the concept has dated since the original.

The actor for Major is currently in foundation, of that’s your jam.

I love Foundation. It’s one of the few times I’ve seen something that they’ve diverged so much from the source material yet made an enjoyable story that is still recognizable.

I haven’t read it, which seems to be a bonus. Those that have, hate it as it’s different to their expectations. Same as we’re discussing, different art. I enjoy it but some of it is a bit off, like the acting is stilted and the motivations are contribed. It’s beautiful and interesting and thought provoking though. I just wish they’d settle on a tone and storyline that they could run with

I have read the Robot and Foundation books, including the newer prequels (and sequels? Its been a while), and I found the show intensely boring, which is really saying something. Plus a robot fucking kills someone in like episode 4 which is like the literal antithesis to what Asimov wrote.

You’re discrediting the great chemistry between Will Smith’s character and Sonny, which means you’re missing out on a good chunk of the movie experience.

Oh, that chemistry is great, but I don’t think he plays the investigator part well, especially when trying to follow the clues left by Dr Lanning. Will Smith’s style is very off the cuff and anti-authority, and while that works in MIB where there’s the very strict Agent K to play off of, I don’t think he works as the sole driver of a light mystery. Sonny and Spooner’s interactions are fantastic, but they’re usually driven by Sonny giving exposition. Spooner is usually just running from things as they unfold.

All in all, not a bad performance (there were plenty of objectively worse ones), but I don’t think it does the movie any favours. There are plenty of great things about i, Robot, but Will Smith is not one of them in my opinion.

Look I don’t particularly like him as a person but it’s hardly a controversial opinion to say he’s a good actor. That was one of his better roles imo.

I don’t particularly like his acting style, completely outside anything he does as a person. iRobot and Men In Black are some of his better roles, but like Jeff Goldblum or Eddy Murphy, he can only play himself. I don’t think it works in iRobot that well though, but that’s more of a casting choice than bad acting.

I agree he’s pretty one note but I do think it works for that and Men in Black. He’s a detective in both so yeah, not a lot of range, but it was more subdued from wacky to just sarcastic in I, Robot. I do like sarcastic jerk as a character type which may say something about me.

Yeah, in MIB he has Agent K to play off of. MIB 3, where he’s the sole driver of the narrative, was a weak entry partly because of this.

He has plenty of good movies and is an objectively good actor, but I think his style needs to be used well, and i, Robot doesn’t quite hit it. Maybe if Dr. Calvin was a stronger character rather than a worrywort and source of romantic tension, I’d like his performance more.

i recently saw post about alan tudyk indicating he was cast aside because will smith had to be lead of irobot, and they saw ALan was the better actor for that movie, he seems kind of pissed about it(this came out at the same time that resident alien was cancelled). will smith pulled a “ROCK,johson” to become the lead.

wasnt she in the original fantasitc 4 movies? Jessen ackles worked with her, and he said she was btch in the set(it was interview) im guesisng thats why she isnt in anything anymore.

they tried to make chris hensworth all sciency sound, in thors ragnorok, when they were referring to the "spatial phenomenon, he doesnt fit that role at all.

according to jensen, she was going through a breakup or relationship problems, and was coming on to HIM, im guessing it was sexual tension.
