  • We visited the kindy during a normal day; we wanted to see how the teachers interacted with the kids and what facilities the kids had available.

We settled on a local Steiner kindy; the staff are all qualified in both ECE and Steiner education. Great people, quite home like; the kids get to help out in the kitchen if they want, rolling the bread buns to be baked or preparing the lunch. Or they just run around and play, dig holes or make up games and stories.

I would advise visiting whilst there is a normal session on.

We did try an ‘in home care’ place before the kindy and we were not happy with it; we lasted around 6 months there. I think it is a bit hit and miss, you could get an awesome one or a mediocre one. I don’t think there are many actual bad ones.

  • There is a bit much.

    The highlights:

    • My biggest gripe; the use of urgency to ram through unpopular legislation without the usual checks and balances. Leading to all kinds of bad laws.
      • None of the “urgent” legislation met the definition for use of urgency, but it turns out there are no protections around its use, just guidelines that haven’t been breached before.
    • When the new govt was formed, they came in a cancelled a bunch of stuff that the previous govt did, some was utterly moronic. It cost us a lot of money and time.
    • Cancelled world leading anti-smoking legislation; which has just been made law in the UK.
    • Fucked up the school lunch system for kids in need; it still isn’t fully sorted 2 years later.
    • Implemented austerity to such a degree that the nascent economic recovery was reversed and we are in a real-wage recession but even though there is “growth” happening
    • Fucking up the education system; basically re-writing the curriculum to hearken back to the 1950-1980’s style, that goes against a lot of the bet evidence; in this they ignored an open letter from the college of teachers calling to not put this in…the new curriculum is just filtering in to schools now.
    • The fast track legislation; rammed through with urgency. This has been opined using “fast track to corruption”; basically it allows the minister to bypass the normal consenting process to allow “significant” projects to go ahead…now projects that had been previously blocked on environmental or other grounds are coming back and getting through.

There are a lot more smaller things; but basically NZ is limping along waiting for the election this year and hoping for change…that may not come because the other major party is fairly meh.

  • Not much detail in the article

Kuwait has declared force majeure on shipments of crude oil ‌and refined products after a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz prevented some vessels from entering the Persian Gulf, hindering its ability to meet certain customer commitments, Bloomberg News reported on Monday, citing a document. State-run Kuwait Petroleum Corp. notified customers on ‌Friday that it was invoking a contract clause allowing it to withhold scheduled deliveries, the report said.

It added that the decision is not expected to result in a complete halt in supply. Reuters could not independently verify the report.

Whilst this is true; your body does have some pretty neat tricks to maintain homeostasis; it can shift the energy budget around quite a bit to where it is needed.

Your body will down regulate some systems to try to keep your total energy balance within what is “normal” for each person.

Digestion uses quite a bit of energy; this is why sometimes you feel sleepy after eating; your brain has been down regulated to enable digestion.

Another common example is when runners get into “the zone”; this is your brain prioritising the required processes and reducing the energy of other parts, putting you into a semi trance…this is so your body can maintain an energy balance.

It is also why we sometimes feel sick if exercising hard and then eat quickly afterward; your gut is not ready for that job.

High energy process that can be “switched off” or at least significantly reduced:

    • Brain processes (up to 25% of your energy budget)
    • Immune system (~20% when fighting infection)
    • Digestion (dependent on food 3[sugar] - 30[protein]% of food energy)

Just because you have done some exercise; doesn’t mean you have used more total energy that day…it seems counter intuitive; but your body likely shifted energy from one thing (immune system, brain) to muscles, for the time your were exercising.

In saying that exercising is so good for other things; physical and mental health are enhanced by exercise, there are so many good things about exercise, just don’t rely on it for weight loss.

As the old saying goes “you can’t out run a bad diet”; you are correct, if over the long term you eat fewer calories than your body requires, you will see an effect. But your body is a tricksy beast, it will do all it can to prevent this; it is why dieting is so hard in an age of abundant food.
