In both these cases, dd serves no real purpose. It’s purely a superstitious charm trying to ensure safe passage of the data. You can see how silly this is when you replace dd with the functionally equivalent cat: cat /dev/sda | pv | cat > /dev/sdb

Interesting, though I always use dd on Linux

Because those ISOs are meant to be written directly to a disc or a drive.

However, it seems that Rufus has a dd mode. You can use that instead :)

Edit: I remember for sure that there was a wiki page that said not to use these tools because they modify the image (I think Rufus extracts the image to a FAT FS?).

However, the Ubuntu wiki now reads:
