  • That’s tight fit. If you really need the two capture cards then that’s the room you’ve got to work with. If you can bring it down to just one card at the top that would be a lot better. I personally use a capture card that’s connected using USB3, which works very well and doesn’t require room inside the computer (even though I would have room).

    Most videocards have two or three fans on the bottom these days, with such a tight fit one of the fans can easily collide with the capture card. And even when it doesn’t it will have a hard time sucking in air from there. You can try and find a blower type card, but that would be a bit harder to find.

    And you wouldn’t happen to have a GPU inside the CPU? Because the iGPUs from AMD are very solid if you don’t need much in terms of performance (easily faster than the 1030 you mentioned). Otherwise two capture cards and a GPU is a big ask in such a small case.


  • The A series is pretty limited, I would go for a B series if you can find it. But keep in mind drivers for Intel on Windows are terrible and on Linux even worse. So that would not be a good time.

    There’s plenty of cards that would fit in 40mm, but your airflow would be pretty bad. Do you have a pic of the inside of your system? There has to be a way to make something more fit.

    But most 6600, 7600 and 9060 cards should be able to fit in 40mm. And with AMD the drivers on Linux are very good.







  • We used to have many many books! I had three bookcases full of books. Some dealing more with concepts and principles. Some just straight up maths in all sorts and forms. Some were reference books, just listing everything there is to know about a language or a piece of hardware for example. Grouped logically and with an index to look up stuff quickly. With the most used ones having post it notes with annotation and as crude bookmarks to look up stuff that was critical and easy to forget, but needed often.

    These books were often handed down, generation to generation. A lot of my maths books were from my grandfather, with almost every page having tons of annotations and expansions on the subject. He liked to write his knowledge and thoughts in the books with a pencil. A lot of my shelves also had notebooks full of my own writings about different subjects. Designs, compilations, quick references, etc.

    We also had something akin to the internet actually, but it was referred to as the sneakernet. Meaning to transfer information you’d have to walk from one place to another with physical media (floppy disks or even data cassettes or reels if you are real old). It wasn’t fast, but there was a lot of excellent content shared around. I remember for example Ralph Brown’s interrupt list. Everyone I knew that did software for DOS had a version of that list hanging around. And getting a new version from a friend of a friend was a real treat. There were also libraries and demo programs that were shared around a lot. For Pascal for example there was this SWAG (SourceWare Archive Group) collection that was shared a lot.

    When BBS became more popular, people found stuff on that. But it was never a primary source for me, it was always a copy of a disk from a friend of a friend who got it off some mythical BBS somewhere. Books and magazines also often had floppies with them and later CD-ROMs. In the early days not many people had CD drives and CDs were seen as a luxury thing. So books and magazines didn’t include the CD, but had a way you could order it for a few bucks and usually it was worth it. Magazines were also much more plentiful at the time with most catering to very niche subjects. I had a magazine back then that released every few months and was nothing but source code listings, deep dives and maths. It wasn’t entertainment like magazines became later, it was a way of keeping informed and doing research. Back then we didn’t always have hard drives and when we did they weren’t as big and very expensive. So having a large library of not just book and magazines, but also floppies and CDs was essential and a mark of a good software developer.

    It was a better time I feel like looking back. Everything was much slower. These days we get bombarded with information non stop. Software development has tight deadlines, with new releases days or weeks apart. Back then I would easily spend a week submerged in books and such to fully absorb the information, so I could develop some piece of hardware or software, or both. It would be normal to work on something for months before sharing it with others. And they would take weeks to read all about it before they felt like they could discuss it. It was still hard work, both in effort and complexity, but the brain was allowed to work at its own pace. These days we’re just running all the time, because number must go up and will nobody think of the shareholders?

    I feel like I’m just an old fart who is becoming a luddite after loving tech my whole life. Not everything was better in the past, but I really don’t like the direction tech has taken over the past decade or so.

    The way it’s usually done is a second camera gets inserted where the mirror is and does its own rendering pass. The result is then applied as a texture on the front. So what you see is what that camera sees.

    However there have been very creative solutions in the past. For example Duke3D actually had the whole room mirrored behind the mirror and the mirror was just a piece of transparent geometry the player couldn’t pass through. The engine would spawn in an extra sprite that the player controls, but with the controls reversed. That way you could actually see “yourself” in the mirror.






  • Wasn’t the IPO of SpaceX setup to be a rug pull? With them only selling a small part of the shares and current shareholders being able to sell their shares way sooner than normal. They put it up at a ridiculous price, idiots buy it because somehow there’s always large groups of people buying into Musks bullshit. Then before the price drops the current share holders sell that part of their shares. This would make them so much money and would allow Musk to pay off the debt he made with his fuckups in the past.

    Is any of this legal? Doesn’t really matter since the Trump administration has pretty much killed any kind of oversight and consequences for this kind of thing. No wonder we saw Musk hanging out with Trump all of the time.

    I hate to break it to you, but when someone states anything in metric, I immediately have a feel for how large that is. That’s because we usually state everything in metric, so we don’t need to refer to random stuff and just learn the sizes of everything.


  • Suuuuure, sloperators are going to be big.

    Maybe let the tech speak for itself instead of forcing all this slop down our throats. The harder people shout “THIS IS THE NEXT BIG THING!” the more I don’t believe it. All of these comparisons to old tech that became big, but don’t look at the thousands of ideas that never became big. Just because some tech got big, does not mean any tech will be big and the odds are very much against any single tech becoming big.

    And these comparisons to the dotcom bubble, sure it was all a bubble, but the tech was valid! That’s true, but we didn’t know that at the time. And the bubble popping still sucked, the economy was bad, people lost their jobs, regular folk were suffering for VC going ham on some new tech. And it also turns cause and effect on its head. It wasn’t like the dotcom tech needed the bubble to become successful or that tech can’t become successful without a bubble. Just because AI is now in a big bubble doesn’t mean anything useful will come out the other end.

    Personally I think the future of AI is more in small dedicated expert systems, that do select specific roles and do them well. Not these know all, do all, everything chat based LLM systems they are pushing now. And I believe we will have specific chips that run these systems in an efficient local way, not the subscription based future tech is pushing now. I also believe there is a hard ceiling to this tech, where it can be pushed so far and not further and I feel we are close to that ceiling now. Going beyond requires exponential more time and effort to setup and run and in the end there just isn’t a use-case available where it’s cost effective to do so.

    But hey, I’m just an idiot on the internet, what do I know.

    And keep in mind there weren’t just large beasts, but small ones as well. People tend to focus on the big ones, because they are most impressive, but they came in the full range of sizes. Just imagine how alien our planet looked compared to what we are used to now.
