A third of people called for jury service last year didn’t show up. Is the system broken?

I hope a link to a SPINOFF article isn’t offensive. I found the article interesting and seemingly informative. I think the courts, including juries and jury duty, are important parts of society. I expect the compensation provided is a very small part of the actual cost for almost everyone called. But compared to other social obligations the cost of jury duty is not too much. It’s not obvious from the article if a third or people ignoring the call for jury duty is problematic for the courts. Maybe they just call more?

I’ve been called 3x in the last 30 odd years:
1, I was flying out to the UK the week before.
2, I was living in the UK.
3, It was peak season for my work.

    I wouldn’t mind doing it

It’s kinda bullshit that you don’t get paid, I’d be royally pissed if I had to spend a few weeks not being paid, in a courtroom filled with people on six figure salaries. I bet they would have a much easier time getting a jury if they matched someone’s hourly rate, to a reasonable point.
