Has anybody received this notification this morning?

I assume its from Dessalines or Nutomic, since it came alongside the update.

Here are two of the links:

So, what does this mean for aussie.zone?

Does this mean we all need to get a Fairphone with e/os, or another non-android handset? What are the options for that?

Does this mean aussie.zone will break with the lemmy developers and become more independent? A kind of forced Fork?

Just wanting to get peoples opinions.

google is trying to make it the developers fault.

Google is playing with fucking fire.

OP, why are you asking about Aussie.zone breaking with lemmy? This is between google and developer apps

Yeah, i think my imagination just got a bit ahead of the issue this morning. I’m laying the blame on the screamin kids in the kitchen :p

I think almacca@aussie.zone reset my expectations for what this could mean pretty quick. Maybe it wasn’t worth the post.

Might hinder fediverse growth if lemmy app developers en masse don’t agree tobthe new terms though. But i suppose thats about it.

I’ve found the mobile website (as opposed to apps) fine, although I generally avoid apps unless they’re necessary. Which app are you using? (and who are its developers)

Yeah sorry, its Jerboa. I’ve got sync as well, and yet I still forget dessalines and nutomic aren’t the only app developers. Never mind me! 🤦

Thats cool about the mobile site. Never considered using that till now. Might give it a try.

I don’t have the cash to be upgrading my phone very often, although funds are probably going to have to shifted around soon for it. I haven’t looked at Graphene OS, everybody talks about it like it is what Google android was meant to be.

Can it be installed on any handset? I ask because I’ve seen a lot of comments connecting it to the google pixel. Is that the only handset its compatible with?

I don’t think it’s about aussie.zone, but rather the app you’re using to browse it. I got the same message today when I opened Jerboa.

Well i suppose another option would be to log in via the phones browser.

I imagine most people accessing lemmy are using an app for the convenience. Is it likely other app developers will be happy to comply with these rules?

Kinda hope i don’t have to give up Jerboa, its a good app.

Guess when I return to android I’m not going to be able to use apps :(

    spoiler

Or I wade into the waters of Linux based phones with the higher stakes of it being my main device, so I’ll be forced to adapt and deal with any tricky problems under time pressure or I won’t be able to use it. I’m not the most technological person.

I don’t really use apps except my banking app but am increasingly being pressured to for things like maps, and the way things are going may eventually be forced to.

This is really dumb by the way. Or just a naked data grab. You can verify for OS or apps all you want but at such a general level without even having a profile or requiring any impersonation there’s nothing to stop someone else from simply using the phone. Parents do actually keep their child occupied by handing them their own phone… Passkeys may help but can be given for that purpose or guessed. All of this would be better handled by using parental controls.

But Google just has to be evil.

Edit: I don’t currently use any apps to access Lemmy but it probably improves the experience

tbh i just use the ecosia browser on ios to browse/post on aussie.zone

pretty sure it’s just a wrapper for the safari web browser as well
