The number of New Zealanders who voted in the 2023 general election was 77.5 percent and that's considerably below 20th century averages of around 85 percent.

I’d love to know what others think about this. My view is it’s already very easy to cast a vote, as easy as we can realistically make it, and we should be asking ourselves why fifteen percent of the population don’t bother to vote, rather than forcing them to do so.

    85% is good, though finding out why the 15% don’t vote is valuable. Especially so if there are systemic problems that are essentially preventing them voting.
