So they record people, alter the recording, and televise the alterned version, without telling the audience about the change. The show isn’t fiction. How’s this not fraud?

A spokesperson for ITV Studios said: “University Challenge is an entertainment quiz show and is made in accordance with the BBC Editorial Guidelines requirements for impartiality.”

If you’re impartial between people who just want to live their life and people who want to eradicate them, you’re not being impartial.

I disagree with the last one as “Races” aren’t simply a thing to begin with, while genders and sexusal orientations to exist, even if they are complicated.

Not really. Genders do exist in biology. They may not always be clear cut (and one animal might have also both genders at the same time) but they most certainly do exist and are the foundation for sexual reproduction which is very much a thing, next to asexual reproduction. Human races are not.

I have a psychology degree, and I’m back in school pursuing a nursing degree, so I’m currently retaking human development. Both when I originally studied it about 12 years ago and today, we distinguished biological sex from gender and its social and psychological components.

Biological sex is absolutely real, but it isn’t synonymous with gender. Biological sex concerns reproductive anatomy, chromosomes, hormones, and other biological characteristics. Gender also involves identity, social roles, and cultural expectations.

Children begin learning gender roles and stereotypes through socialization in infancy. According to gender schema theory, by around age three, most children can label their own gender. Around four, they develop gender stability, understanding that boys generally grow into men and girls into women. By around six, they develop gender constancy, understanding that changing clothing, hairstyles, or activities doesn’t necessarily change someone’s gender.

Interestingly, children tend to enforce gender stereotypes most rigidly around ages five to six. By seven or eight, they generally become more flexible and accepting of peers who don’t conform to traditional gender expectations.

So yes, biological sex exists and is relevant to sexual reproduction. But that doesn’t mean the social roles, expectations, and identities associated with sex are themselves biological facts.

Fair enough. Then genders are a social construct based on biological features that do exist. While “human races” are a social construct absolutely not based on the biological concept of races.

Biological sex is a large cluster of traits with bimodal distributions where typically the traits are somewhat close to each other on their curves.

this claim is only in any way excusable if youre not a native english speaker

            you are describing “sexes”

sadly some languages (such as Polish) do not distinguish

on the other hand, if you are aware of this distinction and are making this claim despite that, this is a horrifying take

Yes and no. There are demonstrable differences between races aside from appearance, like medical conditions and financial and social pressures, but they are not so significant as to consider each group a totally different species. And, unlike dog breeds, these differences were not created, they occurred naturally. So races are in fact a thing just as much as genders and sexual orientations are. Pretending differences don’t exist is an irresponsible shortcut. The responsible thought process is more “differences exist, but do not warrant better or worse treatment”

It’s a lesson most children have learned by middle school. Some people are black.

The BBC has always been propagandistic, though in a generally posh way using framing and cherry picking rather than the in-your-face way of the likes of Fox News.

It’s just that it used to be mainly Jingoism (visible when comparing their coverage of International News and the participation of British figures in international gatherings, with that of channels in other countries), some amount of Know Your Place and Look Up To Your Betters, and, of course, Eternal Love For The Royals (or, more broadly, Our Political And Social System Is Perfect).

The pride flag is being framed more and more as some kind of big and divisive political statement, while it shouldn’t be… But how do we respond to that? How does one defend against such framing?

It’s political. That’s not the problem. The problem is people saying “politics are unpleasant so we should never discuss them. It’s much more pleasant to just not participate in political discussion. You disagree with me on something? Well that’s now political and it’s rude for you not to shut up about it and just let me have my way. “

Don’t concern yourself with wether something is considered political. Focus on why political discussion is taboo. That’s the real danger.

Or in the case of the pride flag, make them explain why it’s a bad thing? Which is when they’ll say it’s being forced upon them, and the woke agenda is pushed down everyone’s throat and whatever.

Which is also very hard to defend against… That is, I myself find it difficult to find something to say.

It’s just like … Not though?

If they just straight up live in an alternate reality world where seeing a flag and leaving people alone to live their lives is equivalent to pushing the “woke agenda” there isn’t much you can do.

You can ask how it’s being forced on them but honestly they just are cowards with a victim complex who want to feel like they’re being persecuted as they actually are insulated from the worst shit and are benefiting the most from our society.

So … Yeah anyone that says woke stuff is being shoved down their throats is a moron tbh. I’ve had Mormons come knock on my door, never a queer person trying to convert me to … The horrible idea of equality before the eyes of the law?

Yes, it’s exhausting… In any case I want to hang up a pride flag outside my home soon, to at least show some solidarity. I’m afraid it might lead to vandalism, but we’ll see, I guess.

The comparison with Mormons is a good one. We thankfully don’t have those here, but we do have Jehovah’s creeps.

              • Do it, pride flags are very important for us queer folk. They indicate which areas are generally safe and which aren’t. The more proudly they’re flown, the better. If you do, I recommend using the progress flag (with the triangle bit)

You don’t have to be queer yourself to help make queer people feel safe

Not sure between the Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses which of them is worse. They both share a lot of commonality. In that both were created by some dude to excuse their behavior and control the community (in my opinion). Obviously deeper than that and plenty of differences but both of them I find have pretty dubious history.

I swear the BBC used to have the best comedies in the world. Monty Python, Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, BlackAdder, Red Dwarf, I could go on and on and on.

I feel like they haven’t really done anything drastically funny since The Mighty Boosh, which was over 20 years ago now. Inside Number 9 was alright, but gave up its comedic undertone after the first series or so. Red Dwarf has moved to Dave, The Goes Wrong Show was good too, but that was an adapted stage show. Technically The Mighty Boosh started as a stage show too, have the BBC not done any good original adult comedies since the 90s?

I know this is a facetious tangent given everything else the BBC do, but I’m honestly surprised how little anyone seems to notice or care that arguably the biggest entertainment network in the world can’t even entertain its audience any more

However the embraceing of the modern, counter culture and edgy things has gone down the drain as directors have boomerified and have things to lose.

I mean, after doing a genocide Cromwell declared his son his political heir… I don’t disagree but it just never had a chance because British people barely knew what a republic was. They literally just had classical-inspired vibes about it.

No joke, I wrote a paper in college that sourced an Enlightenment era English writer who claimed that the English state was a monarchal republic because the citizens had more rights than the French.
