If Washington can hold up $30 car registration with legal challenges*, then they’d better be able to hold this up with legal challenges, too.

*Washington has the most expensive vehicle registration fees in the entire country, bar none. Years ago, voters overwhelmingly voted for an initiative to cap vehicle registration fees at $30 total. But as of now, it’s still held up in the courts, and we still have the most expensive vehicle registration fees in the country. (It’s a tax that hits the working poor the hardest – not only are the working poor, most of whom need a car to commute, the least able to afford the exorbitant fees, poor people are more likely to be using old, worn out cars that need to be replaced more often, leading to working poor people needing to pay these fees more often than well-off people who can afford a more reliable car.)

Thr constitution only allows a bill to have one subject which must be the title. The $30 car tabs initiative was not just $30 car tabs but also cuts to transit funding and other changes in the budget. Those are different subjects; different questions that must be asked separately.

To be constitutional it would have needed to be reduced to one subject, or split into several different initiatives. That law was blocked for procedural reasons, not for its merits.

I don’t think this could be can be blocked for the same reason.

“But no income tax” oh fuck off. I hope it gets sorted soon, I don’t miss registering in Washington when I lived there.
