  • I understand the authors reasons, but for me personally, having paid for the app, I’ll use it until it no longer suits my needs. Right now it does early what I need and does not cause me any issues. As soon as the enshittification hits me though, I’ll abandon it for something else. I also would not recommend someone purchase it, given the new pricing, and the availability of free alternatives. Had they been there when I paid for Plex, I’d be using them instead.

  • Yes and no, I only buy refurbs these days, so long as they work out of the box, they have been far more reliable than retail drives from a box store.

Definitely higher incidents of DOA drives, but the ones that work, have been pretty solid.

Still don’t trust spinning rust, so in addition to dual parity raid, I also have a full backup copy. But I no longer have reservations about refurb drives…

Already done. It was actually a freebie supermarket plant my son picked up. The local store has a section where the ugly and dying plants are free. So we picked up a chocolate mint, and are trying to bring it back to life.

I had it nearly there, so I gently moved it to a bigger pot, with fresh new soil, and it promptly died. There was one single stem that was left that had gotten buried when I replanted it. Everything behind it died, but it must be trying to put some roots down at a buried node or something. It was floppy and I thought dead, but then decided to come back to life and is growing new leaves. Fingers crossed, I’m too afraid to touch them t right now, so I’m just keeping it watered and sunny and hoping it comes back.

I can always go get some from the yard :).

I have a mint plant in my house, in a pot, that I simply cannot seem keep alive. It has a single stem left that’s trying its hardest to die every moment. I’ve taken it as a personal challenge to nurse it back to health (I need an easy win these days)

Last time I mowed, I noticed a new weed in the yard, popping up all over; this one smelled different, pleasant even. Fuck me, I’ve got a yard full of mint that showed up on its own, I’m guessing to mock my black thumb.

  • The problem with AI is not the aesthetics of what it produces. AI can provide good, bad, beautiful, ugly, smart, stupid, etc. What people hate about it is not the artifact, it’s the fact that it took no talent or skill for, but is being claimed as a work of value. Monet spent his life perfecting his style, and did so with likely visual impairments. His art was never about perfection, it was about emotion and a display of what he could accomplish through his life of creativity. Goes the same, even for artists I don’t care for (I’ve always thought Jackson Pollack’s works are unpleasant). I may not like them but I can respect the effort, and dedication.

AI are has none of that. The work was done long in advance, by the vast training materials which is essentially the collective output of human creativity. Also by the people who coded the AI, figured out the math, etc. Now clowns like this fucker come along, manipulate people to prove a “point” that’s utterly pointless in the first place.

God I hate the future we’ve chosen.

  • Right, I run almost the same stack as this guy, but on a dumpster dive office PC turned into my NAS, and three used, micro form factor pc’s I picked up for 60 bucks. My most expensive thing is the hot swap silverstone case for the refurb 4 and 10tb hdds.

Also, why pfsense when opnsense exists (j/k, just my preference).

  • It’s a lot of fun, but not an internet replacement yet. They did just come out with a new dual band that has enough bandwidth to do something useful. Can’t wait to give it a try.

Still very worth setting up. I have a node that runs in my attic, and a few that I can take around with me. I can get good single most anywhere in my neighborhood, and I have enough nodes nearby that I can pretty much communicate with people all over the metro area (I’m in the twin cities).

  • I’m in the same boat. I love that it makes self hosting easier for me. It does what I need and even gives me a small extra measure of security. I admit, I use it because I’m lazy, I could do it without Cloudflare and do for some services. So, I figure if it truly becomes urgent or intolerable I can drop it from the stack.
