I wonder if it’s a white balance thing, as in the setting you’d see on a camera or in a post processing tool.

For instance, consider that “soft” or “warm” light bulbs (say 3000K and below) are common in cozy indoor areas. They cast a much more yellow color of light compared with a daylight bulb or actual daylight, which will look very blue in comparison.

It’s like the model detected that the image was people in a living room and it applied a warm white balance to the whole picture because most images of a family in the living room have warm lighting globally.

But since it is a machine and apparently has not yet been explicitly taught that comics generally have bright colors and no strange tints, then it does not adjust accordingly.

I wonder if that is even giving it too much credit. Maybe it’s just the deterioration from all the iterations of garbage in, garbage out.

Turtles are kind of in between with their wedge-shaped heads. They need the awareness to hide from predators, but some of them are also predators themselves or they at least snap at fruits and veggies to eat them.

I think installing Linux exposes you to higher severity issues, like “now it won’t boot”. Once you get over that initial setup, it’s not much different than windows or apple.

I think that’s also the case any time you are the OS installer and administrator for your own system. I haven’t purchased an off the shelf PC for myself since the '90s, and in the years since then I’ve had many more basic “this shit won’t boot” issues with Windows, though granted I used Windows much more during that time.

And even if you ARE setting up your pen system from scratch, I would submit that the install process for Linux Mint is an order of magnitude simpler than Windows these days.

Being simple to use out of the box is NOT a bad thing on its own. We are simply used to seeing the proprietary profit-driven version, which is the path to enshittification. When something works great out of the box but you still own your machine and have access to any damn thing you want that’s hidden from view by default, that is just a good product.

I’ve been an engineer in electronics and software for over 20 years. I have a masters in software engineering. I currently work on C and C++ code every day for embedded systems, including one that’s embedded linux. The terminal is my comfort zone. Screens full of super-legible monospaced text please my eyes.

I run Linux Mint Cinnamon (btw) on every computer of mine, even my work machine, and I don’t care who knows it!

I recommend it to anybody of any skill level who will listen.

Yeah the whole “big rip” or whatever the colloquial term is, is an interesting one to think about if the expansion just keeps on accelerating.

But from what science news I follow, I think our models and theories in that area are in for a shake-up. It will be interesting to see!

I think that is kind of orthogonal to the concept of heat death, though, which is more about entropy. Any universe that has a solar system or galaxy in it is far from reaching the state of heat death.

Not a physicist, but I thought the heat death of the universe also involved all the matter being sucked into black holes and turned into pure energy. There’s a big chunk converted up front in the accretion disk, then the rest is converted into hawking radiation as the black hole(s) evaporate over the oodles and oodles of years.

Whether or not there are also lumps of iron-56 or other matter floating around in the cold void probably depends on the real truth behind dark matter and dark energy and their long-term behavior.

That general approach was so common. It really is sad.

One of the really bad effects of modern society (american especially) has been conditioning us to think of ourselves as these independent entities separate from nature and from our actual physical communities & people. We just interact with those things when we require their resources, etc. Transactional relationships happen.

One effect of this is, of course, not being considerate to those around you. But as your example shows, some people are so bad about it that it’s not even a question of deciding whether to choose their own convenience over the safety of others. Considering the risk to others never enters the picture in the first place. When asked about it they would answer something like “my health is my concern, their health is their concern, and it’s also none of my business.” Said politely and without malice. It’s just ingrained that deep.

Just yesterday I wiped the drive and installed Linux on the 3rd old PC for the LAN setup I’m putting together, literally “for the children!”

It’s an i7-920 from 2008. It has TRIPLE channel ram, baby. I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon and it was as quick and painless as usual.

I already get the warm fuzzies when I walk into the room and find my 3rd grader playing on my PC instead of their tablet or even the console. Our first LAN party is gonna be sweet.

I thought your comment would be one of those rare instances where you can make a sentence more accurate by generalizing it.

They REALLY like doing it with people, and ruining the environment and/or climate is just shitting on other people (especially the poor ones) with an added level of abstraction.

FOSS is free and open source software. And the word “free” does a lot of heavy lifting there because it refers to much more than it typically not costing anything. It means that you have the freedom to do what you want with your stuff, basically. You (or others on your behalf) can see the source code for what the software is doing, and you can even change and improve it.

You’ll see the word “libre” thrown around in this context too, for that reason. For many people the liberty side of free matters a lot more than the no-cost side. But they do go hand in hand, because not needing to protect a revenue stream makes it a lot easier to not enshittify software. You’ll see names like LibreOffice and FLOSS instead of FOSS.

So it’s basically the whole Linux world that is very well represented on Lemmy and the fediverse. :)

FOSS is important. Having control over how you use your own hardware and files is important.

But even if none of that mattered, once I actually used Jellyfin for a few days the snappy bloat-free feel of it won me over. Switching between Plex and Jellyfin felt like switching between windows and linux.
