US chicken companies pioneered restricting sleep to keep birds eating around the clock.
A new study (Li et al., 2026) recommends giving chickens just 2 hours of darkness nightly to maximize the time they spend eating. The study and photo are Chinese.
We know chickens have far better hapiness with 7–8 hours of darkness to sleep.
But they eat more when they are sleep restricted.

I am looking forward to the day that cloned meat is an thing. It would likely save on resources, be more sanitary, and would prevent the suffering of animals for our pleasure.
However much I enjoy my chicken tenders, I would like less awful to be involved for getting them onto my tastebuds.
If it’s been a while since you tried them, I’d suggest any of the plant-based tender options. Some of them are so good, I’d choose them over animal tenders even if I weren’t vegan.
What if you found out that “cloned meat” had a partial brain - like the made a chicken with a partial brain - just enough to grow it - fed through tubes - would that be better or worse than now?
